Filed to GERWECK.NET:
“Hands of Stone” Ronnie Garvin stopped by Under the Mat Radio to discuss his feelings on a few topics such as his honest thoughts on Dusty Rhodes, his NWA World Title Win vs. Flair at Starrcade ‘87, meeting a young Randy Orton and so much more! You can listen to the full interview here; here are some of the highlights:
Ronnie on his feelings of Dusty Rhodes :
“Dusty Rhodes was overrated. He was the booker most places he went, Florida, Carolinas…I didn’t like what he done a lot of times. Alot of politics, he put himself in places he should’ve been, he didn’t draw the big of money. When he (Dusty) was in the main event he booked 30 men on the card and had more gimmick matches. Rock N’ Roll Express, those kids were so over… so over that they would sell out and Dusty Rhodes would book ‘em in small towns because he (Dusty) didn’t want them on the same card as him because he wanted the THUNDER…”
Ronnie on Flair and the Starrcade ‘87 match:
“You know I’ve had a lot of title matches, I don’t want to diminish the World Title it was great but I guess with luck and staying healthy long enough I got to the very top. To me, and I” m being honest wrestling was a job pure and simple. I didn’t go crazy because I was the World Champion. I’ll tell you (with laughter) the World Title is probably the most money I made in a short period of time .”
“I was in wresting 5 years before Flair showed up (while laughing). I don’t know the guy, I mean I know him (speaking as in working with him) but I never visited with the guy, never had a meal with the guy, never traveled with him, I ran into him a few times in the dressing with and said Hi and Hi but know nothing about the guy. We had two different lives he had the party life which is fine and I don’t begrudge it. One thing about Flair no matter how I hard I hit him he never complained…”
Ronnie on meeting and young Randy Orton and him using his signature stomps:
“Yeah I’ve heard and had wrestling fans tell me. You know I met Randy and he doesn’t know that, I met him when he was 3 months old (with laughter). This is no kidding and when I quit wrestling one day I was channel surfing and came across WWE and I heard Orton and I saw this good looking guy . Tall and athletic looking and I started to listen and they started talking about Bob (Orton Jr) and the Orton family and I said WOW he was 3 months old. I never saw him again because I moved…what a change (with laughter).”
Ronnie Garvin also discuss his favorite wrestlers to be in the ring with, his hobbies, thoughts on Rick Rude, what happened to him when Jim Cornette threw the fireball in his face and much more in this exclusive 1hr interview on Under the Mat Radio.
