This Day In Wrestling History – February 21st

1993 – WCW SuperBrawl III is held in Asheville, NC in front of 6,500 fans.  Ric Flair made his return to WCW after parting ways with the WWF.  Flair did not compete at SuperBrawl.  However he did attempt to put the NWA World Heavyweight Championship belt, around the waist of new champion Barry Windham;  Windham defeat The Great Muta to win the title, but would not allow Flair to put the belt on him.  In other matches, Davey Boy Smith defeats Bill Irwin (this was Smith’s WCW debut).  In the main event, Big Van Vader defeats Sting in a White Castle of Fear Strap Match.

1999 – WCW SuperBrawl IX is held in Oakland in front of 15,880 fans.  Barry Windham & Curt Hennig defeat Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko, to win the vacant World Tag Team Championship.   In a Hair vs Mask tag team match, The Outsiders (Kevin Nash & Scott Hall) defeat Konnan & Rey Mysterio, Jr.  Hall replaced Lex Luger, who suffered a biceps injury three days earlier on Thunder.  With the loss Mysterio is forced to give up his mask;  had he and Konnan won, Miss Elizabeth would’ve had her head shaved.

In his second match of the night, Scott Hall defeats Roddy Piper, to become the new United States Champion.  In the main event, Hollywood Hogan defeats Ric Flair, to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.  Hogan gets an assist from David Flair, who used a stun gun on The Nature Boy during the match.

2000 – In the Monday Night Wars, WWF RAW IS WAR (5.9 TV rating) beats WCW Monday Nitro (2.8 rating).

2005Chris Masters makes his WWE television debut, defeating Stevie Richards.  During the match Masters performs the Polish Hammer, and breaks Richards’ nose.

2010 – WWE Elimination Chamber is held in St. Louis in front of 17,000 fans.  John Cena wins the first Chamber Match and becomes the new WWE Champion;  Cena defeats previous champion Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, Triple H, Randy Orton, and Ted DiBiase, Jr.  After the match Mr. McMahon comes out to congratulate Cena, and tells him he’ll be going to WrestleMania….but only if he can defeat Batista in an immediate, impromptu title match.  Batista needs only 32 seconds to defeat a worn-out Cena, to become the new WWE Champion.

Chris Jericho wins the second Chamber Match, to become the new World Heavyweight Champion;  Jericho defeats Rey Mysterio, R-Truth, CM Punk, John Morrison, and previous champion The Undertaker.  Prior to entering the Chamber Match, Undertaker suffered first and second degree burns on his neck and chest, after a pyrotechnics accident during his ring entrance.  He was cleared to compete by a ringside doctor and used bottles of water to douse himself, to alleviate the discomfort.  During the match, Shawn Michaels sneaks into the Chamber, and super kicks Undertaker, allowing Jericho to get the pin fall and become the new World Champion.

2011 – It’s announced on Monday Night RAW, that “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania Weekend.  During the show, WrestleMania 27 opponents John Cena & The Miz defeat The Corre (Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel), to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.  Wade Barrett immediately invokes the automatic rematch clause.  Slater and Gabriel reclaim the titles, after Cena gets the Skull Crushing Finale from his own partner.

2013 – On this evening’s Impact Wrestling, Velvet Sky defeats Gail Kim, Miss Tessmacher, and Tara, to win the TNA Knockouts Championship (Four-Way Elimination Match).

2015 – At the Women Superstars Uncensored 8th Anniversary Show, Nevaeh defeats Niya, to win the WSU Spirit Championship.  Also, Annie Social & Kimber Lee defeat David Starr & JT Dunn, to win the WSU Tag Team Championship.  And LuFisto defeats Shanna, to retain the WSU Championship.

2016 – WWE Fastlane is held in Cleveland, OH in front of 14,446 fans.  Kalisto wins a Two-out-of-Three Falls Match over Alberto Del Rio, to retain the United States Championship.  Kevin Owens defeats Dolph Ziggler, to retain the Intercontinental Championship.  Charlotte defeats Brie Bella, via submission, to retain the Divas Championship.  In the main event, Roman Reigns defeats Brock Lesnar & Dean Ambrose, to become #1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship;  Reigns will face Triple H at WrestleMania 32 for the title.

2016 – Atsushi Aoki defeats Hikaru Saito, to win the AJPW Junior Heavyweight Championship.  This was the finals of the 2016 Junior Battle of Glory.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: current TNA wrestler Tyrus (most sites list him as 37 years old, but Wikipedia insists he’s 44 today);  former WWE Intercontinental, United States, & Tag Team champion Carlito (38 years old);  former TNA World Tag Team Champion Crimson (32 years old);  former NXT Tag Team Champion Oliver Grey (30 years old);  United Kingdom wrestler Harry Mills (29 years old);  and indy wrestler Bryan Skyline (36 years old).

Today would’ve been the 56th birthday for former WWF Women’s Champion Bertha Faye.
