7/20/16 NXT Recap: Nia Jax vs. Bayley

Tonight’s NXT opens with a preview video of tonight’s matches: Samoa Joe vs. Rhyno, The Authors of Pain vs. American Alpha, and Bayley vs. Nia Jax. We then see the opening video for NXT and then go into the NXT Arena at Full Sail University in Winter Park Florida, where Tom Phillips and Corey Graves welcome us to the show.

Match #1: Rhyno vs. Samoa Joe
They tie up and neither man gets the advantage. They tie up again and Joe sends Rhyno off the ropes. They collide in the middle of the ring, but neither man drops to the mat. Rhyno goes for another shoulder block, but Joe holds is ground. Rhyno goes for a third, and this time Joe drops to the mat. Rhyno gets Joe in the corner and delivers a few right hands and chops. Joe comes back with chops of his own. Rhyno kicks Joe in the midsection, but Joe comes back and sends Rhyno down to the mat in the opposite corner. Joe goes for a cover, but Rhyno kicks out at two. Joe kicks Rhyno in the chest and back down on the mat and goes for another cover, but Rhyno kicks out again. Rhyno fights to his feet, but Joe drops him with an atomic drop and a big boot. Joe goes for the senton, but Rhyno moves out of the way. Joe and Rhyno exchange right hands and then Rhyno gains the advantage. Rhyno drives his shoulder into Jor’s midsection in the corner and delivers a belly-to-belly suplex. Rhyno sets up for the Gore, but Joe counters with a kick to the face. Rhyno tosses Joe into the corner and charges again, but Joe counters and slams Rhyno down to the mat. Joe locks in the Coquina Clutch and Rhyno taps out.
Winner: Samoa Joe.

We go backstage and see Asuka standing by for an interview. She says she would fight Bayley, Nia Jax, or both of them. We see that American Alpha will take on The Authors of Pain next as we head to a break.

We see that the WWE Cruiserweight Classic will continue next on the WWE Network, immediately following NXT.

We take a look back at last night’s WWE Draft, specifically the NXT draftees: Finn Balor, Nia Jax, American Alpha, Mojo Rawley, Alexa Bliss, and Carmella.

Match #2: American Alpha (Chad Gable and Jason Jordan) vs. The Authors of Pain (Gzim Selmani and Sunny Dhinsa) (w/Paul Ellering)
The Authors attack Alpha during Alpha’s entrance and end up throwing them off of the stage and slamming them to the ground. Ellering nods from the top of the stage and then walks down to The Authors as they head to the ring and we head to a break.
Back from the break, we see William Regal and the referees checking on American Alpha as Ellering has a microphone in hand in the ring. Gable and Jordan shove the referees away and get into the ring and brawl with The Authors. Alpha clears the ring of The Authors and then Ellering sends them back and the bell rings.

Jordan starts the match with one of the Authors and Jordan backs him into the corner and drives his shoulder into the Author’s midsection. Gable tags in and does the same, and then Alpha double-suplexes the Author and Gable goes for the cover, but the Author kicks out at one. The other Author tags in and they flatten Gable in the ring and then double-team him in the corner. They make another tag, and then another, and keep beating down Gable. The Author applies a bearhug to Gable, but Gable gets free and Jordan tags in. Jordan drops one Author with a clothesline and the other with a suplex. He drops the other Author with a suplex and goes for the cover, but the Author kicks out at one. The Author comes back and drapes Jordan over the top rope and Gable tags back in. He drops The Author with the Power of Gable and goes for the cover, but the Author kicks out at two. The Authors go for their finisher, but Jordan trips one of them up as Gable gets the other in the Ankle Lock. Jordan launches to the outside to take out one of the Authors as the Ankle Lock hold is broken. Gable attempts a baseball slide, but he is caught by one of the Authors and slammed into the ring apron. Jordan is them slammed into the steel steps. The Authors double-team Gable and drop him with a big clothesline and get the pin fall.
Winners: The Authors of Pain.

We go backstage and see The Revival. Wilder says The Authors of Pain need to send them a giant birthday card because they broke down American Alpha for them. Dawson says they have proven that they are the best tag team on the planet. He says there is no tag team that can beat them, and then Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa walk up. Gargano says they already beat The Revival and Ciampa says the only thing they haven’t done is hold the titles and Gargano ends it with “Tick-tock, boys.”

We see Bayley warming up for her upcoming match against Nia Jax as we head to a break.

We see the video hype package for the return of Hideo Itami, who will return to action in two weeks.

Match #3: Patrick Clark vs. Austin Aries
They tie up and Aries gains control of the match. Clark comes back and takes Aries down to the mat, but Aries quickly gets to his feet and backs Clark into the corner. Aries beats down Clark in the corner and then delivers a dropkick in the corner. Aries quickly locks in the Last Chancery and Clark taps out.
Winner: Austin Aries.
After the match, No Way Jose rushes the ring and brawls with Aries. Jose beats down Aries before Aries is able to escape over the barricade as Jose stares him down.

We see Nia Jax taping up and getting ready for her match against Bayley, which is next.

Match #4: Nia Jax vs. Bayley
Nia charges at Bayley, but Bayley moves out of the way. Nia catches Bayley and goes for a choke hold, but Bayley quickly gets free. Bayley goes for a headlock, but Nia slams her into the corner. Bayley wrenches Nia’s arm, but Nia reverses it and wrenches Bayley’s arm. Bayley gets to the ropes and reverses the hold again. Bayley works over Nia’s arm and then drives her into the corner. Bayley delivers a series of right hands before Nia shoves her away. Nia puts Bayley on the top rope and then slams her face-first into the turnbuckle. Nia slams Bayley into the middle rope and then to the outside. Bayley rolls back into the ring, but Nia keeps control of the match. Nia chokes Bayley over the top rope and then clubs her down to the mat. Nia goes for an elbow drop, but Bayley moves out of the way. Nia grabs Bayley and slams her into the corner and delivers a few headbutts. Nia stomps down on Bayley, but Bayley fights back and slams Nia into the turnbuckle multiple times. Bayley connects with a forearm, but Nia comes back and tosses Bayley across the ring. Nia kicks Bayley to the floor as we head to a break.
Back from the break, Nia Jax is still in control of the match. Nia slams Bayley into the corner and then drops her with a scoop slam in the middle of the ring. Bayley fights back and kicks Nia in the face and then slams her into the corner again. Bayley connects with a corner clothesline and goes for a cross body, but Nia counters with a back-breaker. Nia goes for the cover, but Bayley kicks out. Nia tosses Bayley out to the floor again. Bayley gets back into the ring at the nine count, but Nia powers her down to the mat again. Nia tries to toss Bayley to the outside again, but Bayley counters and sends Nia to the outside. Bayley gets on the ring apron and takes out Nia with a flying clothesline. Bayley grabs Nia, but Nia counters with a knee to the face. Nia goes to smash Bayley against the steps, but Bayley moves and Nia crashes into the steps and Bayley rolls back into the ring. Nia gets back into the ring at the nine count, but Bayley catches her with a forearm. Bayley uses the ropes to her advantage and delivers a series of right hands and a dropkick while Nia was trapped in the ropes. Bayley drives her shoulder into Nia’s midsection in the corner, but Nia counters with a knee. Nia tosses Bayley into the corner and charges, but Bayley moves and counters with knee lifts. Bayley goes up top and takes Nia down with the cross body, but Nia kicks out of the pin attempt at two. Bayley goes for the Bayley-to-Belly, but Nia counters. Nia goes for the power bomb, but Bayley counters with a roll-up, which Nia kicks out of. Nia comes back and slams Bayley down to the mat and goes to slam her from the ropes, but Bayley counters with Bayley-to-Belly from the ropes and gets the pin fall.
Winner: Bayley.
