Blunders Continue to Plague World Championship Wrestling

The true powers that be in WCW continue to make nothing short of bone-headed decisions. Case in point:

Starrcade PPV card: Starrcade is WCW’s equivalent to Wrestlemania, or at least, it once was. This year’s line-up looks like any other WCW PPV card. After months away from television, Sid suddenly reappears and is given a WCW title shot against Scott Steiner. Goldberg, who should have received the title shot, is yet again lowered in facing Lex Luger. You won’t see much wrestling in these two “main events.” This year’s Starrcade card is missing the marquee names of Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Booker T, and Sting.

Scott Hall: It is a sad state of affairs when the most over person in WCW is a wrestler no longer on the company’s roster. Despite the wishes of management, Kevin Nash, and now Diamond Dallas Page, continually mention Hall’s name in a shameful attempt to pursued WCW in rehiring the former Outsider. Simply stated, WCW does not need Hall back, and should take appropriate actions against Nash and Page.

In typical WCW faction, management took action against an announcer rather than against one of the company’s “untouchables.” Mark Madden was suspended for one week with pay after making disparaging remarks about the aforementioned Page.

Battle Dome Angle: WCW created an angle with the characters from Battle Dome (a show disturbed by Columbia Tri-Star, a company financially backing Eric Bischoff’s quest to purchase WCW). On a recent episode of “Nitro,” the Battle Dome Warriors attacked Rick Steiner.

The following week, Battle Dome management asked WCW to pay travel expenses for their personal to fly to the subsequent “Nitro.” WCW balked at the request, and the angle was dropped without WCW gaining any retribution against Battle Dome.

Torrie Wilson: The beautiful fitness model, originally from Idaho, was recently involved in a televised angle to explain her absence from television. Behind the scenes, WCW has decided to release her from the contract she signed almost a year to the date to eliminate her reported $250,000 per year salary. The way Wilson was utilized in WCW leads me to believe that she was signed simply to prevent her from going to the WWF.

Wilson, who is dating Billy Kidman, is exploring her options. She has already turned down a reported $52,000 salary offer to remain with WCW. Wilson is a natural beauty that could net a wrestling company a fortune. It is obvious that WCW continues to miss the boat with Wilson, who is also enrolled in acting school in Los Angeles.

Glacier: If the first go around wasn’t bad enough, WCW is bringing back Ray Lloyd, the man behind the Glacier character. The creative team decided to rehire Llyod since fans despised Glacier in his first stint with the company, not realizing that is not legitimate heel heat. Instead of hiring Jerry Lynn, The Reckless Youth, or bring back Juvetund Guerrera to improve the wrestling product, WCW opted to bring back the ridiculous Glacier gimmick.

Next week, “Between The Ropes” features my exclusive interview with ECW’s Steve Corino.

Tidbits: The February 4th Women of Wrestling PPV will be subtitled “Unleashed” … Jim Ross has confirmed that the WWF has had discussions with representatives for Rob Van Dam … Kimberly Page, the former Nitro Girl and wife of Diamond Dallas Page, is no longer under contract to WCW … Sabu has received his full release from ECW … Chris Chetti received a WWF try out at the Smackdown/Heat tapings in New York City.
