WWF and WCW Stars to Appear on the 1999 Brian Pillman Memorial Card
The World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling will send
talent to the 2nd Annual Brian Pillman Memorial show slated for Wednesday, May
19th, at the Cincinnati Gardens in the Buckeye State.
Pillman was found dead in his Bloomington, Minnesota hotel room on the morning
of October 5, 1997. He was only 35. The exact cause of death has never been
determined, although an enlarged heart has been blamed.
At press time, the card shapes up like this: Mankind will wrestle D'Lo Brown, "Road
Dogg" Jesse James squares off with Al Snow, who will bring The Head to the event.
Former NWA North American champion, and current script writer for the WWF,
Terry Taylor challenges 3-time WWF tag team champion Dr. Tom Prichard in
what is being billed as a Legends match.
In the main event, former WCW Tag Team champions Dean Malenko and Chris Beniot
face WCW Cruiserweight and Tag Team champion Rey Mysterio, Jr. and Konnan.
WCW veteran referee and Pro Wrestling Illustrated's Man of the Year Mark Curtis will
officiate the match.
Also on the card is a one-night six-man Pillman Memorial Cruiserweight Tournament,
featuring some of best cruiserweights on the independent circuit. The cruiserweights
involved are Shark Boy, Chip Fairway, Terik The Great, Chad Collyer, Jeramy Jett,
and Matt Stryker.
Before the event, you can get a Polaroid taken with any of the stars on the card, or one
of the special guests such as Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat or Woman, for only $10.
Fourteen time world champion "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, and Bret “The Hitman” Hart
may also make an appearance.
WWF champion "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, who was Pillman's tag team partner and close
friend, was originally announced to appear, but the organizers rescinded the announcement
based on Austin's hectic schedule.
Jim Ross had also agreed to help with the broadcast, but decided to remove himself
from the show so he can attend his daughter's graduation. Chris Jericho was another
talent mentioned, yet he will is scheduled for the Bruise Cruise.
Tickets went on sale April 7th, and are still available through Ticketmaster
(www.ticketmaster.com) and from the Cincinnati box office at (513)
631-7793. Prices range from $50 for a ringside seat through $25 for elevated
seats.
Also scheduled is a special silent auction of donated items from the wrestling
superstars scheduled to appear. The final bidding will happen in the ring during
intermissions!
J-Mar has donated a replica of the NWA World Television Title belt, which will
be raffled off.
The festivities will benefit the Pillman Memorial Fund. Brian left six
children behind (including one he never knew about before his death). The
fund was established to take care of Brian's children, making sure they receive a
quality education, and provide them with life's necessities.
