Interview with Alex Wright

Interview conducted: July 2001

Key:
SG> Steve Gerweck
AW> Alex Wright

SG> Who were you trained by? I assume your father, Steven Wright?
AW> That is correct. My Dad started to train me, when I was only a couple years old.

SG> When and where did you make your professional wrestling debut?
AW> Year ' 91 in Wupperthal, Germany. For CWA. I was 16 years old.

SG> Did you win your first match?
AW> Yes.

SG> Did you capture any titles in Germany?
AW> No.

SG> How many matches did you have before joining WCW?
AW> Maybe 80, I really can't recall.

SG> How did you become affiliated with World Championship Wrestling?
AW> WCW had a German tour (in 1994). At that time there was a big TV talk show in Germany, which some wrestlers from WCW had to attend to, to promote the tour. It was Sting and Johnny B. Badd (Marc Mero). Also Alan Sharp, the Public Relations guy from WCW was there. The topic of the talk show was pro-wrestling. At that time, I just started to wrestle and I was the youngest pro wrestler in Germany, so the TV show called me. So when I got there I met Sting, Johnny and Alan. Alan was the guy that invited me to one of their shows. I went there, next thing I had a try out match against Paul Roma. They liked it very much. I finished the rest of the German tour. After that they made me an offer for a training contract. Which of course, I took.

SG> Do you have a favorite WCW match?
AW> No, there are so many good matches. So many good wrestlers.

SG> Who is your all time favorite tag team partner? Why?
AW>I guess Disco; he made me laugh so many times.

SG> At Starrcade '94, you wrestled Jean-Paul LeVeque (Triple H). How would you describe that match? It was a good match; of course I was still green at that time.
AW> What were your impressions of Triple H at the time? Very good and hard worker. Great Talent.

SG> How did you like wrestling in Japan?
AW> I really enjoyed wrestling in Japan. I like the style over there. Hopefully I get a chance to go over there again.

SG> What is your most memorable Japanese match/encounter?
AW> I would say, the match when Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, Pillman and me wrestled five Japanese Guys. That was one the toughest matches I ever wrestled.

SG> How did you like working with Debra?
AW> It was fun; she is a very nice lady.

SG> One of my all time favorite Alex Wright moments occurred during a 1998 Nitro at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan. For the first time, you danced with the Nitro Girls. Whose idea was that?
AW> I think it was Terry Taylor's idea, he has a great mind for stuff like that.

SG> Who created the Berlyn gimmick?
AW> Diamond Dallas Page, Dusty Rhodes, my wife and me.

SG> Did the Berlyn gimmick ever have a chance to get over?
AW> At one point, yes. Right at the beginning.

SG> When you reverted back to Alex Wright, why the bald head?
AW> I just felt like it.

SG> To wrestling fans that didn't know him, how would you describe Brian Hildebrand?
AW> Very good and kind Person, and super referee.

SG> Ultimately, why did WCW fail?
AW> Backstage politics. Also I think, they rushed too many of the story lines.

SG> What is your opinion of Eric Bischoff?
AW> Very smart business man.

SG> What is your opinion of Vince Russo?
AW> The same.

SG> Which match do you consider your greatest?
AW> There is really no match, which I think was the greatest. I always try to give a 110%, and do my best to have a good match. I wrestled so many really good wrestlers, it would be unfair, to point out one match. But I really enjoyed the match in Germany, Feb. 2000 against Vampiro. That was really a fun night.

SG> What have you been up to since the sale of WCW?
AW> I'm sitting out my contract, so as long as I'm still under contract I can not wrestle for any other promotion. I work out really hard to keep in shape.

SG> Are you currently watching WWF television. If so, what is your opinion of their product?
AW> Of course, I watch it. And I think they are doing a great job.

SG> Would you like to work for the World Wrestling Federation?
AW> Yes, it would be great to work for them. I just have to wait and see. Maybe I will try Japan.

SG> When does your AOL Time Warner contract expire?
AW> At the end of this year.

SG> What does the future hold for Alex Wright?
AW> I hope only the Best. (Laugh) I think I will know more about it in a couple of months.
