Interview Recap: Malia Hosaka


Interview conducted: January 14, 2005

Interview highlights:

- Hosaka said she is looking forward to working with Gail Kim since she has never worked her in the past.

- She said she isn’t interested in writing a book, even though she has been asked to write one.

- Hosaka is now semi-retired from the business and can decide whom she wants to work with in the ring.

- She would like to wrestle Alere Little Feather, ODB, Lady Vendetta, Tracy Brooks, and other female grapplers. Hosaka likes to work with girls that have a great attitude and eager to learn more about becoming a better wrestler.

- Hosaka stated that she actually hated pro wrestling growing up. Her father would watch wrestling on Saturday mornings, which didn’t allow Hosaka to watch the “Smurfs.”

- She was trained by Killer Kowalski.

- Hosaka talked about wrestling in over 40 countries. She said wrestling has allowed her to travel over the world.

- Hosaka talked about wrestling to entertain the troops.

- She plugged her official web site at www.maliahosaka.net and her yahoo group.

- She talked about a new group she put together called the IWWA, and is looking for financial backers.

- Hosaka stated that she hasn’t watched WWE in five or six years. The product is not consistent with what she was taught about the business.

- She put over Trish Stratus as the most believable and marketable girl that Vince McMahon has.

- She talked about her stint with WWE, being offered a contract, signing it two months later. Terry Taylor and Vince Russo left the company, and she was put on the back burner. She was under contract to WWE for about a year, but was later released.

- Hosaka was asked to train in Memphis while under contract to WWE, but since they didn’t have any story for her, and wouldn’t pay her travel expenses, she refused and was eventually let go.

- She talked about doing an angle as a fan with Ivory, but her identify was revealed on the Internet immediately afterwards. Hosaka said she was almost given Lita’s role as manager for Essa Rios, but eventually the company gave it to Amy Dumas.

- Hosaka talked about working for WCW, and doing matches with Madusa. She said she was told that she appeared in eight out of the top ten rated "Nitro" episodes.

- She talked about winning the WLW Women’s title from Brandi Alexander as one of the most rewarding and memorable matches.

- She talked about working for FMW in Japan.

- She plugged her up coming dates.

- As for top U.S. women wrestlers, she put over Brandi Alexender, Brandi Wine, Helena Heavenly, and Trish Stratus.

- Hosaka talked about her projects outside of wrestling.

- Hosaka stated that she has agreed to pose for Missy Hyatt and Francine’s web site, but will not do nudity.

- Hosaka stated that she has seen the attitude about women in wrestling change over the years.

- She stated that she has no professional regrets.
